Position Description

WestEd is seeking a multi-talented user experience and visual designer to be a key member of our web development team. The ideal candidate is a thinker AND a maker – a self-starter who can carry out the design vision on a wide range of projects, work with internal teams, and can roll up his or her sleeves to create design mockups and code-ready files.

This is a part-time position located in the San Francisco office, and has the potential to grow into a full time position in the future. This position will work under the art direction of the Lead UX and Visual Designer. We offer a flexible work schedule and a cloud-based environment that provides tools to work remotely as needed.


The designer will
• Work collaboratively with the Lead UX and Visual Designer to create the visual design for web applications and complex websites.
• Work independently on smaller website designs from conception to delivery.
• Create site maps, wireframes, and mockups for responsive websites .
• Iterate with client and development team throughout the development process.
• Create visual designs adhering to universal web design principles and agency guidelines and brands.
• Produce design specifications and production graphics for implementation.
• Ensure usability and user interface standards are applied throughout the web development process.
• Collaborate with clients on content strategy and information design.
• Present work to internal clients, external clients and funders.

Design Project list
• Social and promotional websites.
• Content-rich informational websites.
• Administrative systems user interfaces.
• Blog-driven websites.
• Data-driven web applications.
• Online learning environments.


• Compelling portfolio that demonstrates a breadth of project sizes and skills. *Please provide links and a description of role on each project.
• 4+ years proven experience as a web designer, user experience designer, or visual designer.
• Strong visual design skills including layout, information architecture, color palettes, typography, and iconography.
• Demonstrated ability in all phases of designing user experiences.
• Demonstrated ability with responsive design.
• Solid skills in Photoshop and Illustrator. Skills in UXPin, Sketch, Omnigraffle, Balsamiq or other wireframing and prototyping tools.
• Experience providing content strategy while designing text heavy, informational websites.
• Ability to communicate design rationale to an audience of mixed backgrounds and design/web experience.
• Working knowledge of HTML 5 and CSS.
• Eager to learn about new technologies, education, and new design standards.
• Experience with or willingness to learn about accessibility standards (WC3 or 508 compliance).
• Bachelor’s degree or similar training.

Nice to Have, But Not Required
• Experience with user research, audience analysis, usability testing, and persona creation.
• Experience designing for e-learning, K-12 education, or teacher training.
• Illustration skills.
• Experience with data visualization.
• Comfortable working in an agile work environment.
• Experience designing for Salesforce applications
• Experience with the following: Javascript, Bootstrap, Wordpress and Drupal
• Experience working with a Ruby on Rails development team.
